how to dye fabric @ home : step by step instruction

hi

thanks of bearing with me

I will request every body to go through my previous post on dye-ing @ home ,where I have covered on materials which  are used to make this dupatta of mine..

this dye-ing process is no way crafty-its more like proffesonal..the diffence is you are dye-ing a small fabric at home.

before I start the step by step instruction,I want to share - I could relate with two tutorials ,
1) some dye powder is used with normal salt with warm water and  the fabric is dipped in it .
2) scouring ,which is noting but to clean the fabric so that color can fast.here

I find that the process that I am about to tell is a cross between these two.

lets begin

1.for one mt of fabric
MN /colour 5gm
orange salt /GC 20 gm
monopol soap 2 spoon
caustic soda 1 spoon -don't use much

let trial and error be the guide.

2.when you buy new fabric,it has a starch on it,make warm water ,add some detergent and soak it overnight to remove the starch ,srcub lightly ,and dry it.

3.before you dye the fabric please keep it soaked for at least an hour in a roomy bucket so that it can float easily.it helps dye to penetrate in the fiber .

4.next thing you want are two enamel coated bowls ,you can use any glass or porcelain bowls which can be heated over the stove.we want a non-reactive bowl here.

5.don't forget that you are about to work with some chemical compounds when boiling dyes in the kitchen.make sure you don't contaminate anything.

6.now take the GC /salt and pour it in the enamel pot.mix same amount of ,or little bit more ( around 7 spoons) of normal salt in it ,add water so that these two can be fully dessolve.keep it aside.

7.in another  enamel coated bowl mix monopol soap and MN /Colour with some water and bring it to the boiling point, keep stirring so that monopol soap can desolve.then add caustic soda.bit by bit.you may see some changes in the boiling mixture, its normal.turn off the stove then let it cool down.

8.Alert::: no amount of squeezing or wringing of the fabric is allowed when dye-ing.

9.take two buckets of water ,make sure the fabric should be able to float inside the bucket.that means enough water .

10.in one bucket /tub mix the POINT 6,in another POINT 7.

11.now remove the fabric from the bucket in which it has been soaked for an hour ,and just let the excess water drop away, then put the fabric in the bucket where you added the POINT 7.with the gloved hand stir the fabric so that it can be well soaked in the water.if you don't want to use a glove ,you can use a strong stick.here you may not see any change in colour.

12.after few minutes put the fabric in the bucket where you mixed POINT 6.stir.BAM!!!! here you will see how you fabric has changed colour.

13.repeat  the point 11 and 12 simultaneously .( at least for 4 times )you may notice how the colors are getting deeper with each dip.

14.wash the fabric with normal water, dry it in the shade.no squeezing or wringing..

15.next time you wash it ,probably after use, wash it separately. dont take any chance, but I dont think these colours will ever bleed. you are done .enjoy you fabric.

this process may seem very long to some of you but believe me ,I had to be clear in my instructions so that everyone can follow it.

feel free to ask me ,if you have doubt.

try it.

see you soon

how to dye fabric at home!!! (Tie and Dye) :supply that you need

dear All
finally its rainy season!!
after a long time I am back with another tutorial.

I have been looking for a tutorial on "at home" fabric dye-ing which involves caustic soda ,monopol soap, regular salt and chemical compounds of colour.but could not find such tutorial.

I was looking of this kind of tutorial because our local craft store has no "easy- to -do" dye suitable for home dye-ing.

Internet is full of tutorial where ready made dyes are used and these are quite easy to do @ home .thanks to my  famous city where every thing related to modern craft  are unheard of.No problem..I was a newbie at the first place and I had many rocks ahead to stumble upon before I would reach my destiny --long way to go .Recently silk painting has attracted me a lot,and local market does not have any silk colour ,as expected.

Couple of years ago I bought a book on fabric dye-ing from the annual book fair. Its more like collage reference book.it was very hard for me to understand those technical terms and chemical formulas( I stayed away from chemistry all my life like plague)but I got some brief ideas about dyes.that got me interested.

I know you guys are very bored @ this moment..

time to upload some snaps

As far as tie and die is concerned ,internet is full of such tutorials.

in the 2nd picture you can see the things used  for dyeing the above fabric .

the blue object is obviously a pair of gloves( recommended-  you are dealing with caustic soda here !!),
after that" MN colour"( dont worry abour the word MN written over the pouch-its the name of the chemical to create an orange colour),
then Orange Salt GC,
the small bottle has monopol soap,
next to it is the caustic soda,
two more things that you require are -normal salt, and enamel coated bowls.

It was bit nightmare-ish at first, because I was dealing with some unknown chemicals.some questions did occur to me,namely ,if it would leave ugly marks in wash room floor or not ,should I avoid using the kitchen altogether or not,but believe me it was not that hard at the end.yes putting the gloves on and washing the buckets and utensils after using is must.

for my first project I wanted to make me a dupatta.hence bought 2.5 mt of plain cotton white fabric.

I dont know about other cities ,here in my famous city dyes and other required stuffs comes in a very affordable price, in a very small -"one time use" quantity too..I bought my dye from a trusted craft supply store and it came with an instruction manual too.

additional infos:

pigment dye= used for block printing.-thick creamy
acid dye=have to use viniger or other acid to fast the color, natural fabric
batik dye= general dye,you can use wax to create different motifs.natural fabric

sorry guys ,I have to end this post here.
detail instruction is in the next post.

see you soon

fortunately I had a sewing machine at home(very basic model) ,and I resolved to learn everything from internet.for a
newbie like me,its very tough to figure out sewing tricks ,but I find it refreshing .believe me this can be very tough thing to do at first ,hence I chose to sew bags .

this time a reversable bag.

all credit goes to verypurpleperson

altough I have made this bag handles differently.

I have this old jeans which I hate to throw out, hence turned it in to a bag.
