Altered book : burnt book Tutorial

hi

dear All

this is my first tutorial on Altered book!!

I am yet to see a book alteration inspired by a  vintage book that is half burnt ..its done from my imagination...if anyone has done something on similar idea ,please let me know,  i will love to see those.
please excuse the picture quality
lets begin

get any old book

get a cylindrical box of incense (agarbatti) cut it half, glue it on the spine of the book...

above snap shows how to apply  pva  glue..

like the same way ,paste 2 card boards on each cover of the book ,then paste 3 small pieces of card boards on the spine.. hope you can understand it clearly..

the book should look like above...
i have chosen a hand made paper to cover the book..cut out a piece of handmade paper.

keep the book aside

now we will work on the paper..

wet/damp the paper just a little and crumple it ..that's how you break the fiber of the paper..here i must add a point-you may use grocery bags  (brown one ),but i wanted a paper which could withstand much torture!!

you may want to repeat this step 2 or 3 times ,until the paper looks very much old..

after its done-simply iron the wet /damp paper, until its quite dry and stiff.

closer look

use acrylic paint to colour the paper . i have used a sponge to apply the paint diluted with the water.

after ironing

i have done this on the book cover with pva glue and chalk powder.mix these two in a thick paste, use cone to apply it .let it dry.

add putty with an old flat brush on the cover aswell..it will add a roughness on the smooth card board cover which will look like an old cardboard in the later stage.

now the fun part
burn few places on the paper -be careful while doing this .

at this stage , i chose to paste the paper on the spine first..apply pva glue and water.use a pencil to define the edges .

mix ultramarine blue ,a little black ,little white and apply on the cover, after it dries up ,use burnt umber here and there to create more shadows

that's how it should look like ...

now add pva glue and water ,apply on the cover, lay the paper and use embossing tools to define the design which lays underneath
if needed dip the embossing tools in the water

after the embossing is done raised areas are dabbed with shoe polish sponge ,add some metallic paints on the raised areas too,i have used antique gold acrylic paint ,you can use your fingers to dab

done .. after it dries up,use wood finish varnish..not on the black areas, use it just on the paper..

let me know what do you think?

enjoy

Altered bottle: Tutorial

hi

 Dear All

I wish you a very HAPPY NEW YEAR...

Cant believe another year passed so quickly!lets start our new year with a new tutorial! as you know altered art is one of my favorite subject

you can see my other altered projects  here.

lets start..

take a bottle of your choice .Wash it .you may remove the lebel,in this case I did not remove it.get a piece of cloth and soak  it in  PVA glue.and wrap around the bottle .Create drama when wrapping around-it should have some pockets and crevices ...let it dry for a night...it should become pretty hard..

on the next day sprinkle sands at the bottom portion of the bottle( apply PVA glue ,then sprinkle) ...I borrowed this sand from construction side.
After it dries up ,gently shake off the excess sands..

after applying gesso

next its time to apply putty...I am using just ASIAN PAINTS putty ..get a spatula or a palette knife and apply putty to the areas where there is no fabric..the idea is to create as much as texture as possible....

now get a piece of newspaper -crumple it --wrap a plastic sheet over it --use it as a tool to create texture with it on the putty which you have just applied.. it will add a weavy effect on the putty ( we dont want putty-portion look just plain)

here at this point you have to fix all the sea-shells at the neck of the bottle....just stick those in the putty
these are available at any craft store
let it dry over night ..it may depend on the weather condition..then apply gesso..again let it dry

TIPS: when ever you work with this type of textured projects make sure you apply gesso/colour very carefully -it should go in to every dent or crevices..because people tend to twirl bottles in their hands hence ,no portion should be done poorly..check second time always..

make a star fish of m-seal and stick it.
and at the neck the coral is real!!

after 1 coat of high gloss enamel paint

after this  high gloss enamel paints should be applied all over the bottle ..gesso helps enamel paint to adhere greatly..this picture was taken after 1 coat...I applied 2 coats .

let it dry ..it took 2 days in my case....

after it was dried --get your old brushes..here I used 2 brushes so I can apply  paints in every corner... dont forget to keep a rag handy

now apply oil paints as per your choice -and wipe off with the rag ...here how it looks

Enjoy
